5 Easy Swaps to Make Your Kitchen More Sustainable

It’s easy to get caught up with single use products. They’re often seen as more convenient and creating less mess as you can just toss it out after using. But there are some vey simple swaps you can make to reduce your waste and even save some money in the long run. This list is for those just starting to make some changes, and should be very easy to incorporate into your everyday practice

1. Use a Silpat mat instead of parchment paper

While parchment paper is not plastic, it is still waste that is unable to be recyled. The Silpat mats are silicone coated, making it non-stick without oil or butter. They work great for baking cookies, roasting chicken or lining trays of brownies. According to their website, the mats should last for 3000 bakes if cared for properly – that’s over 8 years if used every day!

2. Ditch the plastic wrap for reusable silicone lids

I know how it goes: you have a bowl full of whatever you made for dinner, and you really don’t want to dirty another container to store it for leftovers, so you throw some plastic wrap over the top and forget about it. Well not anymore! Get these silicone lids to have the best of both worlds – fewer dishes and zero waste. They’re dishwasher and microwave safe, and unlike other plastics they’re non toxic.

3. Washable dish cloths for paper towels

It’s so easy to reach for a paper towel when you spill, or want to pat something dry, but did you know over 13 billion pounds of papertowels are used each year in the USA alone? This requires 110 million trees and 130 billion gallons of water. Make the swap for washable dish cloths and save some trees! You can even make your own like the ones I have in my kitchen.

4. Never buy single use baggies again

Baggies are handy, but create a lot of plastic waste. Instead use these reusable silicone baggies, or start saving your empty jam and pickle jars. The silicone bags are microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe and are perfect for packing snacks in lunchboxes or carrying around on the go. Saving jars is the perfect way to save some money and reduce plastic use and waste. They’re a great option when gifting food since it’s not a big deal if you get them back or not. Personally, I love using jars for meal prep!

5. Plastic free scrubbing brushes and sponges

Typical sponges and scrubbies are made of plastic and not recyleable, but these options are natural and compostable! This scrubber is made from wood and tampico bristles, and its fast drying property will help prevent bacteria. Naturally antimicrobial and made from vegetables, these loofah sponges are the perfect swap for cleaning sponges for any household task.
